For many within the surveying profession in Utah and throughout the West, Darryl Fenn’s name has become synonymous with leadership, mentorship, service and dedication to the profession of land surveying.
After a career spanning nearly five decades, Darryl officially retired in June 2026, closing a remarkable chapter that began in 1979 when he first entered the surveying profession directly out of high school. What followed was a career defined not only by professional success, but by an unwavering commitment to advancing the profession and investing in the people within it.
In 1997, Darryl, alongside two engineering partners, founded Meridian Engineering Inc., helping build what would become one of Utah’s respected engineering and surveying firms. Under his leadership, Meridian grew into a company known not only for technical excellence, but also for its culture of mentorship, professionalism and integrity.
While his accomplishments in business are significant, those who know Darryl best understand that his greatest impact has always been on people.
Throughout his career, Darryl dedicated countless hours to the Utah Council of Land Surveyors, serving in nearly every capacity imaginable. He served two terms as UCLS Chairman, represented Utah at both the Western Federation of Professional Surveyors (WFPS) and the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS), chaired numerous committees, organized conferences and advocated for the advancement and protection of the profession.
His contributions to surveying education are equally important. Darryl was one of the original adjunct instructors involved with establishing and teaching the Salt Lake Community College surveying program, helping create opportunities for future generations entering the profession.
Those who have worked alongside Darryl quickly learned that when he committed to something, he was fully invested. As noted during his recognition as the 2013 UCLS Surveyor of the Year, “There is no in between … he is either all in, or all out.” That mindset became a defining characteristic of his leadership throughout his career.
Whether leading Meridian, mentoring young surveyors, teaching students, serving within UCLS or helping improve the profession through committee work and legislative involvement, Darryl approached every responsibility with enthusiasm, confidence and purpose.
Over the years, Darryl became known not only as a respected surveyor, but also as a trusted mentor and friend to many throughout the profession. His ability to blend technical knowledge, business leadership, humor and genuine care for people left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to work with him.
In his own reflections on his career, Darryl described surveying as “a proud profession that merges a love for the outdoors with cutting-edge technology.” He often spoke about the adventure that surveying provided and the unforgettable people he encountered along the way. Yet perhaps the clearest reflection of his career came near the conclusion of his own write-up:
“Throughout this incredible journey, I have forged deep friendships with the men and women of UCLS, who have become family, united by our commitment to the profession. If given the chance to do it all over again, I would choose the path of a surveyor.”
That statement perfectly captures the heart of Darryl Fenn’s career.
While retirement marks the end of his professional chapter, his influence will continue to be felt for many years to come through the countless surveyors he mentored, the students he helped teach, the leaders he encouraged and the strong foundation he helped establish within both Meridian Engineering and the surveying profession throughout Utah and the western states.

Writing this article is both professional and deeply personal for me.
I have had the privilege of working alongside Darryl Fenn since joining Meridian Engineering Inc. in August 2002. Over the last 24 years, Darryl has been far more than just the president of Meridian. He has been a mentor, teacher, leader and friend who helped shape not only my career in surveying, but also my understanding of leadership, business, professionalism and service to this profession.
On May 1, 2025, I had the honor of succeeding Darryl as president of Meridian Engineering Inc. That opportunity is one I do not take lightly, and I can honestly say I would not be where I am today without his mentorship, trust, guidance and example throughout the years.
Many surveyors throughout Utah know Darryl for his leadership within UCLS, WFPS, NSPS and surveying education. Those of us fortunate enough to work directly beside him also know the lasting impact he has had on individuals behind the scenes through mentorship, encouragement, accountability and belief in others.
His legacy extends far beyond projects, companies, titles or accomplishments. His greatest legacy will always be the people he invested in along the way.
Thank you, Darryl, for everything you have given to Meridian, the surveying profession and to so many of us personally.
